Celtic Coins

Introduction

Celtic coinage was minted by the Celts from the late 4th century B.C. to the mid-1st century A.D. Initially, these coins imitated Greek designs, especially those from the time of Philip II of Macedon and his son, Alexander the Great. The Celts were influenced by trade with and the supply of mercenaries to the Greeks, which shaped their coinage. As Celtic engravers developed their own unique style, their coins became distinct. Celtic coins often featured stylized horses, abstract shapes, and portraits of Celtic chiefs. These designs reflected the cultural and artistic expressions of Iron Age Britain and other Celtic regions.
